Get old, get stuffed
Since I had the weekend off, I got to take Teh Boyfriend out to several places for his birthday. I hadn’t planned on doing/eating so much, but as I was looking for the perfect restaurant to go for dinner, I stumbled upon a couple other ones that I really wanted to check out.
Saturday night, we went for, what I was told to be, “the best katsu curry in town”, and I was not disappointed. The pork cutlet was nice and crispy, and the curry was nice and sweet. Plus it included mushrooms, and I looove mushrooms so this made me even happier. Teh Boyfriend tried the chicken cream korokke, which also maintained its crispiness quite well. We ordered the cream corn soup to start. And that, too, was very good. It didn’t have much corn, but you could still taste the sweetness of the corn with each creamy spoonful, and the Ritz crackers sprinkled on top complemented the flavour so well with its mix of sweet and salty.
Sunday was officially Teh Boyfriend’s birthday. We made sure to eat lunch at lunch time since dinner would be at 6:30. As well, I knew that dinner would be pretty filling. After trying “the best katsu curry in town”, we were off to try “the best tacos in the city”. I was super excited as I love tacos, but was slightly saddened by the fact that they only had the soft tortilla shells. In any case, we both had one of each of their tacos—chicken, beef, and fish. I do wish they had carne asada, instead of just regular beef, and the service wasn’t particularly friendly or rude, but otherwise, in terms of what we sampled, thumbs up all around. Fresh ingredients, fresh tasting. We were very pleased.
Then came dinner. Oooh, yes. I was really looking forward to this. I mean, I was looking forward to the other good eats, too, but this was the pièce de résistance: we were going to the First Annual Game & Wild Mushroom Festival at Parkside! Slices and chunks of meat from animals hunted for food, prepared and garnished with thoughtful presentation? How violent and poetic. Anyway, we both went for the three-course meal. For my main, I had the red deer, and ohmyfuckinggod it was so unbelievably tender. It came with a Raclette potato, which I’ve never had before, and I know I love potatoes, but this was seriously good. Seriously. It had onions, which I don’t always eat (Depends on how it’s prepared and whether it overwhelms the overall taste), and melted cheese (Raclette, basically) on top, which apparently was stinky according to Teh Boyfriend, but I couldn’t smell it. Not that I would’ve cared because hello, potato! And uh, yeah, it, the whole dish, was just to die for.
And even though we were completely stuffed, we still made it to Mondo Gelato since it it meant that Teh Boyfriend could get his free gelato. FREE gelato! To pass that up just wouldn’t have made any sense.
