The good stuff

Friday night, Teh Boyfriend and I stopped by Gastown to check out a photography exhibit/installation by Boogie, a street photographer whose work has appeared in Rolling Stone and Vice, among many other publications. The show featured works from his new book, It’s All Good, a graphic look at the street life of crackheads, junkies, and gangsters in some of New York’s most notorious neighbourhoods.

Both the movie and music industry have glamourized the use of drugs and gang violence, so it’d be easy to dismiss Boogie’s work as doing the same. But there’s really none of that bullshit in his photography. It’s gritty, raw, honest, uncomfortable, and vulnerable.

(And, because I’m not exactly an art fag, pretty damn cool. Guns? Needles? Rocks? GYEAH!)

Unfortunately, the showing was on for that night only. Buuut…if you missed out, you can still check out some of his photographs online.
